Solo Talk: Failure, Privilege, and Mental Health

Based on my personal experiences as a computer science student with OCD, anxiety, and depression, this talk is on how the pressures faced by undergraduate students in computing affects their self-esteem, the ability to show empathy and be vulnerable, and maintain mental health. There is a huge pressure to be exceptional and competitive through academics, internships, and entrepreneurial/passion projects. Underrepresented groups like women and people of colour do not have the same advantages as the majority, and often leave. There needs to be more open discussions in the classroom on failure, privilege, and mental health.
