Susan Mernit is co-founder and CEO of Hack the Hood, a non-profit organization that teaches young people of color tech skills and prepares them for tech careers. Hack the Hood is a 2014 winner of the Google Impact Challenge. A former VP at AOL & Netscape, & a former Yahoo! Senior Director, Mernit has been a consultant for The Knight Community Information Challenge and a consultant to organizations including Salon.com & TechSoup Global.
Mernit has co-founded 5 startups and launched a number of digital new products and services during her career. A Tech Stars alumni (class of 2008), Mernit also ran Yahoo! Personals, launched The Scholastic Network, co-created The Yuckiest Site on the Internet, and relaunched Parade.com, among other media properties. She is the co-founder of two impactful Oakland, CA non-profit media sites, Oakland Local and LiveWorkOakland.
A popular trainer and speaker, Mernit has taught workshops on social media and news and strategy for The Poynter Institute, the Knight Digital Media Center at USC/Annenberg School of Journalism, and for the Knight Foundation. In 2012, she was a Carlos McClatchy Fellow at Stanford University School of Journalism. Mernit is an avid reader, dog owner, wine drinker and exerciser when she’s not at work.
